Best Indoor Rock Climbing In Seattle

Rock climbing is a growing sport in Western Washington, and the Seattle area offers many indoor facilities dedicated to the sport. These gyms are a great way to keep climbing through the damp, wet Pacific Northwest winters and prepare for the next outdoor rock climbing season. It’s also a great way to stay in shape year round.
Stone Gardens

Stone Gardens is located in the Ballard area of Seattle near the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks. The facility is 16,000 square feet of climbing walls and boulders, with 65 foot ceilings. The walls replicate most climbing challenges, fitted with many different types of holds and top ropes. Outside, there are more walls reaching 40 feet high. All ages are welcome to use the facilities, and classes are offered to learn technical and safety skills. The gym is open seven days a week.

The Seattle Bouldering Project is located in south Seattle near Rainier Ave S. and I-90. This facility is run by experienced rock climbers that escape to the nature-created rock walls to climb and explore. They offer many classes in rock climbing, from beginning to advanced. Each new participant gets a free 30-minute class on safety and etiquette. The floors are protected by seamless pads, and participants are welcome to rent crash pads to use during wall climbing. This is a full-service fitness center which includes other forms of exercise, including weight training and yoga. The gym is open seven days a week.

Island Rock Gym is located on the west side of Puget Sound on Bainbridge Island, serving the west side of the sound. This facility offers youth programs and adult classes. Individuals 14 and older can climb without adult supervision, though waiver forms need to be signed by a parent or guardian. The goals of this gym is to support the climbing community, and operate in a sustainable way for the community/environment. An example of their commitment is the usage of reclaimed steel for the support of their climbing walls. The gym is open seven days a week, and closed on major holidays.

Vertical World

Vertical World is located just south of downtown Seattle, established in 1987. This is the flagship gym, with two others in the local area (Redmond and Everett). This is the largest of the climbing facilities listed here, and is locally owned. It started out as a place for climbers to gather, and grew into a full climbing gym. This is the first such gym in the United States. The gym offers classes from beginning to advanced, and these are taught by rock climbing professionals. This facility also offers fitness assessments, strength training and other fitness classes. This gym is open seven days a week.

The South Bellevue Community Center is part of Bellevue’s Parks and Recreation programs. This is a community-based facility, and open to the community. The facility is home to “The Crag,” a 33-foot wall that is sculpted to look and feel like Index granite. There are five different routes up the wall, and each differ in difficulty. Participants get three attempts to reach the summit. Being a public facility, usage works differently, and fees are less than the private gyms. The minimum age for the facility is four years old, but it’s five years old to use the rental equipment. They offer various classes, youth camps and rentals of the walls for private parties.
